Finger Lakes Wine by Mail

So you've traveled to the Finger Lakes and gotten hooked on the region's wine. The only problem is that now you are home and need more. The good news is that it has been a few years since the laws were passed and agreements made so that Finger Lakes wine could be shipped out of New York State. Our European guests may have to try some place like this for their red wine source. However, for our guests from within the US, there may be a direct solution.

Let's start with the obvious, you can drink wine out of any glass you want.  Do what makes you happy.  There are lots of varieties of wine glasses some of which are designed for aesthetics and appearance and others are designed for enjoying the wine.  I don't need a "pretty" glass to do that, but if you do, then feel free to go for the most glamorous glass you want.  Here are the things I look for in a wine glass.

Pump Your Wine to Keep Your Wine

Opening a bottle of wine presents itself immediately with a conundrum.  If you open a bottle of wine (especially a tannic red) you want to let it breathe for an hour or more to let the tannins oxidize a little so that the wine becomes a little mellower and more round.  The problem is, if you let the wine breathe too long the entire thing oxidizes and just ends up tasting bad.  So the question arises of how do you keep half a bottle of wine around for a few days?  The answer ranges from the simplistic "Put the cork back in" to the space-aged "inject it with an ine

A Rosé by Another Name Might Make You Blush

Photo of three Roses from the Finger LakesFor many years the Finger Lakes "suffered" from a reputation that it could only make sweet Catawba-based Rosé wine. Years later the California based White Zinfandel is credited by many snobs as ruining the notion of a good Rosé. I'm not a big fan of White Zinfandel but I do credit it with being the wine that got a lot of people into drinking wine.

I enjoy reading The Finger Lakes Wine Gazette and I always read it cover to cover. Usually my only complaint is that it lacks balance. Everything is always presented as wonderful and perfect. But I understand that its job is to promote promote and promote some more.

The Finger Lakes Wine Gazette is a paper that is published quarterly. It is full of information on events and changes all the wineries in the Finger Lakes. Can often be enjoyable reading, especially the paper version. They make each issue available online too, but it is not easy to find and more difficult to read. Here is a list of several of them to give you easy access.

This movie is nice introduction to wine tasting on a wine trail. It is specifically designed for the Finger Lakes wine trails. The info on prices for tasting is a little outdated ($1-$5 is now the norm for weekend tastings), but the rest is current.
