When you approach the wine tasting bar for any winery in the Finger Lakes you are almost always presented with a choice. Not the choice of what wines you want to taste (that comes later) . You often are faced with the choice of where to settle in at the bar(s).   My suggestion is to look for the section that's covered by the person who is more endowed with the gift of age and wisdom.  I'm sorry to be agist, but I just find little value in having a 20 something tell me how they like to pour their wine over icecream or what the hhj cartoon means on the bottle of Hazlitt's Red Cat.  When a wine flight attendant (server / pourer / barkeep) tells me that a wine goes well with Sea Bass, I actually want that person to have had Sea Bass and be talking from knowledge rather than a script.

I look for the wisdom of age in a wine flight attendant.  They typically have better explanations that let me know they actually drink the wine and appreciate it.  I find that they are also better able to judge who is there to actually taste & buy as opposed to who is there to consume.  So they are able to give more attention to those who are interested.  I also know that if I choose the more adult looking flight attendant there is a better chance that the person is somehow connected to the making of the wine. (not always true, but the odds favor it)
