The Cobblestone Farm Winery is one of the newer wineries on the West side of the Cayuga Wine Trail.  Onced housed in the farm's cobblestone house, it is now located in a more modern tasting room that has a lot going for it, but lacks cobblestones.  The location of the winery is along Rt 89 in the town of Romulus.  It is one of the northern most wineries on Cayuga Lake, second only to Motezuma Winery at the tip.

The Setting

Cobblestone Farm Winery photoThe tasting room has a stylish look with delicate looking floor to ceiling wine racks.  The main bar a cross the back is very nice and framed in attractive Cherry with a black stone(?) counter.  Other secondary tasting bars are added during the busy season.  Fortunately this visit was in the middle of winter so we got to spend our time at the main bar and had the full attention from the wine flight attendant.  She seemed quite knowledgeable and friendly.  It was a relaxed tasting where we had our pick from all the wines on the tasting list.

The Wine

Cobblestone Farm Winery offers a selection of wines ranging from sweet to dry.  They have a Cabernet Franc that had had just a fantastic aroma.  On the tasting side it was kind of soft for my taste.  Though I do think it would appeal to someone who doesn't care for the stronger, more robust Francs.  Their Merlot was round and enjoyable, not too strong, not too faint.  I quite enjoyed their Dry Riesling while my wife was more fond of the Riesling.  Both had hints of flavors that were enjoyable and distinct from other Rieslings (which abound everywhere in the Finger Lakes).  On the sweeter side of things they offered a Blush wine made from Catawba and Cayuga, which tipped the residual sugar scale at 7 but was balanced quite well and didn't taste that sweet.   For something completely different they also produce a Cherry wine (made only from cherries) that had a nice flavor of cherries without being sicky sweet.  On a hot day both the Blush and the Cherry wine could be quite enjoyable ... on a howling winter day in February, I'll still choose the dry warm reds every time.  ;-)

During our tasting, our attendant mentioned that they were going to be introducing a Lemberger in the near future.  I was excited by that news as I find Lemberger creates a nice dry red wine with velvet texture.  Though I felt sorry for our attendant as it is a guarantee that she will have to endure hours of people making smelly cheese jokes (Limberger cheese, Lemberger wine).
