Sitting on a great location overlooking the shore of Cayuga Lake is a winery with a lot of history. The Thirsty Owl Wine Company itself is not very old, but it has access to some of the most mature grapevines in the region. It was also fortunate enough to start out with and retain some of the most experienced wine flight attendants in the Finger Lakes.  Thirsty Owl has something to please just about everyone.  Those who prefer their wine on the dry side might enjoy the Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, or Meritage.  Those who favor the sweets might enjoy the Blushing Moon, Red Moon or Diamond.  While anyone happily caught between sweet and dry will likely enjoy their Snow Owl or Vidal Blanc.

Wise Owls

Owls are often associated with wisdom and it would not be out of place to say that the people working the tasting counter are owl-like.   Most of them have worked in wine tasting for a long time and are certainly a step above the youngsters found pouring in many of the Finger Lakes tasting rooms.  The wine flight attendants at Thirsty Owl understand the grapes and the wines made from them.  They also genuinely make you believe that they like wine and drink it regularly (that's a good thing).  In our years of going to Thirsty Owl I think we have been served by all of the full timers and have been impressed by each of them.  Matt Bonacci at the Thirsty Owl Tasting BarHowever, one stands out as best of the best.  Matt Bonacci speaks of the wine with a twinkle in his eye and a poem in his heart.  He has multiple poems for each of the wines served so he could pour for you on two separate occasions and you will hear different poems each time (with only some overlap).  The poems are cute at first, and so is his giggle at the silliness of it all, but if you listen carefully you notice he really understands the wine and the varietal that produced it.  He should not be dismissed as merely cute.

The Bistro

The cafe at Thirsty Owl has gone through a few iterations.  The food is adequate but left me wanting more after paying $10 for a sandwich.   I believe it will get better as Simply Red Bistro at Sheldrake Point has raised the level of competition significantly.  The Thirsty Owl bistro has a great setting complete with lakeside patio and great wine to go with the food.  I believe they will manage to fine tune the third side of the triangle.
